Europe 2018 – Berlin Day 1
We got up early, checked out of our apartment, and caught the 8:30 a.m. train to Berlin. We rode in 2nd class (unreserved) seats and arrived about 1:30 p.m.
We found the proper metro line and took it to the neighborhood of our next Airbnb.
After we checked in, we headed back to the metro to start our afternoon and evening walking tour. Near the metro station we encountered a protest demonstration. The group is protesting the increase of the Neo-nazi sentiment and promoting diversity.
We made our way to the Bundestag to begin the walking tour from Rick Steve’s collection. It’s another excellent narration. The tour goes from the Bundestag to the Brandenburg Gate, and down Unter den Linden (under the linden trees) street. There is one side trip to the Holocaust Memorial and the site of Hitler’s bunker. We followed the tour as far as Museum Island.
Walking Tour
We returned to the Bundestag expecting to go inside as we had a reservation for 6:30 p.m., but there was a special party going on, so we rescheduled for two days later.
From there we took a bus to Markt Halle, where on Thursday nights they have food and beverage vendors. It was very crowded and we had to wait for seats at a picnic bench to open up, but we had good food and beer.
After dinner, we headed back to the apartment for a much-needed good night’s rest so we can tackle another day tomorrow.
